What is a Transponder Key?

I am sure you have heard Locksmiths referring to Transponder Keys, but you may not know exactly what a Transponder Key is!

Since 1995 the majority of new cars have used transponders within the key, which works by sending a radio signal needed in order to start the vehicle. The transponder is a small microchip in the head of they key and if a key for the vehicle is cut without programming the transponder the key will not allow the vehicle to start, although it will still turn the engine over. This is because the immobilisers will still be active.

The transponder creates additional security for new vehicles, but it does come with the disadvantage of high costs and long waits when a key is lost and a new one is ordered through a car dealership.  A transponder key is essentially a key with a code transmitter embedded that sends a unique alpha-numeric code to your ignition. When received, the transponder in the ignition tells the car that it is okay to start. Programming or reprogramming a transponder key depends on the make and model of your vehicle. For domestic cars with a vehicle identification number (VIN) that starts with 1 or 4, the keys can be reprogrammed by simply taking the keys out to your car and entering the program mode.

This is where, here at Toowoomba Locksmiths, we can help! With Automotive Locksmith technology we can cut and program 90% of transponder keys using your current key! This way you can store your additional key in case you loose your current key. Using a local locksmith will significantly reduce the cost of additional keys and ensure you are supplied with a copy of your key instantaneously, bypassing long waits.

As your local locksmith in Toowoomba we always recommend keeping at least two transponder keys on hand because, if no current key is present, dealership replacements are generally expensive and incur long waiting periods.
